Looking back at a wonderful summer in Giethoorn
Anyone who visited Giethoorn last summer noticed it immediately: this summer season had something special. With almost uninterrupted beautiful weather, a cozy hustle and bustle combined with a relaxed vacation atmosphere, the popular water village in the Kop van Overijssel was the place to be to enjoy the ultimate summer feeling.
Boating under a clear blue sky
The main attraction during the summer in Giethoorn is, of course, renting a boat. The canals turned vibrant green from all the overhanging plants. Whether you stepped into a luxury electric sloop yourself or took a canal cruise, the feeling of cruising around without a rain shower on your head is exactly why this summer was such a success. The terraces along the waterfront were packed with cheerful people enjoying a snack, a drink, and the passing boats.
The dry weather was extremely suitable for the longer boating routes. Especially the red 4-hour route was very popular last summer. Due to the long, warm period, swimming was possible almost every day in the lakes of Giethoorn and surrounding areas. Therefore, the jetty of the swimming island in the Bovenwijde was regularly filled with rental boats containing families with children. Good to know is that you should always wear water shoes while swimming in Giethoorn. Applying sunscreen regularly is also highly recommended.
The Gondola Parade as a magical grand finale
Summer in Giethoorn is not complete without the annual Gondola Parade on the last Saturday of August. During this atmospheric evening, the village transformed into a fairytale setting. Beautifully illuminated and decorated gondolas on the water slowly sailed past while enjoying music and good company. It brought residents and tourists from both home and abroad together along the waterfront for an unforgettable evening that concluded the 2026 summer vacation. Did you also enjoy a sunny day on the water in Giethoorn this year? What is your fondest memory of the Giethoorn summer?
